Launched in 2019, the UX is a stylish and capable urban crossover that enjoys the role of a gateway model to the Lexus brand. Built on Lexus’s GA-C global architecture platform, it reaps the benefits of a low centre of gravity and a highly rigid body for a rewarding drive with faithful responses to the driver’s inputs. Its SUV credentials are enhanced with the option of Lexus’s electronic E-Four all-wheel-drive system. Fitment-wise, my six-foot-three stature was actually quite comfortable behind the wheel. The steering feel has been improved with a new rigid joint between the top of the steering gearbox mount and the suspension member. In line with this extra rigidity, the shock absorber damping force has been appropriately adjusted for optimum performance. The hatch floor comes up awfully high, which is convenient for unloading cargo and might have something to do with fitting in all the hybrid componentry below it, but it really made the cargo area smaller than it probably ought to be. Still, with the rear seats dropped the UX will accommodate a smaller Ikea—er, Restoration Hardware since it's a Lexus—haul without issue. Strangely, its CVT didn't annoy the hell out of me, and it even "shifted" surprisingly crisply in its Sport modes.
This suspension also makes this Lexus SUV more agile than expected, with minimal body roll in turns. The engine performance is the same as in the lower trims, but the suspension and quicker steering make for a sportier drive. The F Sport Design is a sportier trim level in the UX lineup, but it’s primarily an appearance package. It has some luxury features of the Premium trim, like a power moonroof and rain-sensing wipers, while bringing sportier aesthetics. The standard powertrain in every UX 250h is a hybrid 4-cylinder rated at 181 horsepower, returning 43 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

The system can provide deceleration support up to about 1,000 feet ahead of the vehicle. Featuring the Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain, the 2022 UX 250h boasts 181 total system horsepower. This hybrid is equipped with all-wheel drive standard and high-speed responsiveness and a feeling of smooth, natural acceleration. I can't say the same for any passenger who'd end up sitting behind me—besides maybe a small child—as there's nowhere near enough legroom even with an average adult at the helm. The front seats also featured heating and ventilation which is always nice to see in a brand's entry-level offering. That's … not a whole lot for this bulky hatch's 3,605-pound curb weight, but I was actually pleasantly surprised at its ability to hop it from a stop light. Lexus clocks its zero to 60 mph time at 8.4 seconds, but I was able to achieve around a second less with a little courage and letting the rear powertrain spin up before letting off the brake pedal.
